Expert corner

Our 'Expert Corner' series will ask different funding experts to share their experiences.

Featured expert – Dr Ritchie Head

Dr Ritchie Head – a North-West based research manager who has worked on over a hundred European projects over the last 15 years – shares his expertise on getting involved in Europe.

Difficult to access, bureaucratic, centred on new Member States – these are all misconceptions that are bandied around about EC funding. Not so, protests Dr Ritchie Head, whose efforts to secure European funding has paid dividends for his organisation as well as others he has advised over the years.

Here he tells how he has managed to navigate the European landscape to secure several millions of pounds of funding.

Horizon Europe: Building on the Success of Horizon 2020

The long wait is over. On 7 June 2018, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas held a press conference in Brussels launching the Commission’s proposals for the successor programme to Horizon 2020 – Horizon Europe.

Having built a global reputation as a world leader in research and innovation programming, the Commission believes the successor to Horizon 2020 should capitalise on this strong brand name. Horizon Europe aims to enact an ‘evolution not a revolution’. Set to launch in 2021, Horizon Europe will build on the achievements and success of Horizon 2020, bridging the past and the future of research and innovation in Europe.

Breaking the Ice with International Research Mobility

ResearchConnect dives into the Arctic as it explores how international mobility is making an impact on the world of research.

Mobility and collaboration are an essential part of today’s research landscape. International mobility – researchers travelling to other countries as part of their research – continues to impact our global knowledge.

In a prime example of international research mobility in action, fifteen partners from thirteen countries, including two North American partners from USA and Canada, have joined forces to improve the capacities for marine-based research in the ice covered Arctic Ocean.

Knowledge Translation and Research Impact

The annual ARMA Conference is one of many ways in which the Idox team engages directly with the research community, hearing firsthand the issues and experiences currently affecting the sector.

Returning as Silver Sponsors in 2016, we were delighted with the opportunity once again to support research staff and academics in their quest for funding. To that end, we hosted a session at the event – Knowledge Translation and the Golden Triangle of Research, Impact and Funding – with guest speaker Dr Karl M Smith, Research Impact Manager at London South Bank University.

This report includes Dr Smith’s presentation along with the feedback that we obtained from the group discussions.

Research Funding – Identification, Engagement and Dissemination Strategies

As well as exhibiting at the 2015 EARMA conference as Gold Sponsors, Idox hosted a workshop entitled Research Funding – Identification, Engagement and Dissemination Strategies. The workshop included a presentation from Karen Lewis, Research and Strategic Bidding Manager at The University of Northampton and previous winner of The Times Higher Education Supplement’s Outstanding Research Management Team of the Year.

This report includes Karen’s presentation, which explored how ResearchConnect has been integrated into research strategies within the university to source non-traditional sources of research funding. The workshop also provided research managers and administrators with the opportunity to share best practice tips and advice on the process of identifying research funding.
